A tragic shooting at a high school and nearby residence claimed nine lives Tuesday afternoon in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) reported that six people were found dead inside the Tumbler Ridge Secondary School when they responded to the emergency call around 1:20 p.m. Pacific Time.

Authorities subsequently discovered a seventh person died en route to a hospital while being treated for their injuries at the scene. Additionally, two individuals who had been shot at the school are currently hospitalized with life-threatening conditions. Two others were found deceased in another crime scene linked to the incident—a nearby residence—where their condition was not disclosed.

The gunman is reported to have died from his own actions, the RCMP confirmed. Approximately 25 other victims received medical attention for non-life-threatening injuries at a local facility. Residents of Tumbler Ridge, with a population around 2,400, were initially advised to stay indoors as reinforcements were deployed locally.

District Superintendent Larry Neufeld, representing the Peace River South School District, stated that an “excess” of resources from the RCMP and ambulance services had been sent to the community. He added, emphasizing concerns over potential safety risks: “We want to protect all parties involved in this operation.”

Community officials expressed their deep condolences for those affected by these acts of violence, with Premier David Eby tweeting on social media: “Our hearts are with families in Tumbler Ridge tonight as we grieve the loss of loved ones. The government will do everything possible to support our community during these difficult times.”

The Peace River South School District initially reported a “lockdown and secure hold” at both the secondary school and the Tumbler Ridge Elementary, before it was clarified that only the secondary school would be closed for the rest of the week.

Titled Tumbler Ridge Secondary School has 175 students from Grades 7 to 12. The province’s official website provides this information as well.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his anguish in a statement on social media, stating: “I am devastated by today’s tragic shootings in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia.” His message conveyed solidarity and support for the victims’ families.

Both local officials and national leaders underscored the seriousness of this crisis, offering condolences while emphasizing their commitment to providing comprehensive assistance to those affected.
