At least nine Palestinians were killed in Sunday’s airstrikes on the northern and southern Gaza Strip, according to Palestinian civil defense and health officials. The attacks came in response to alleged Hamas ceasefire violations. Medics reported at least four dead from an Israeli airstrike on a tent encampment housing displaced families in Khan Younis, Gaza’s south.
An Israeli military official stated that “terrorists” had emerged from a tunnel east of the “Yellow Line,” prompting retaliatory strikes by the IDF. This followed Hamas’s violation of the ceasefire agreement in the Beit Hanoun area the day before. The official characterized Sunday’s actions as precise and compliant with international law, citing six violations committed by Hamas since the October ceasefire.
In recent hours, Israel had already initiated a response to these ceasefire breaches. Hamas is accused of deploying east of the demarcated “Yellow Line,” which separates Israeli- and Hamas-controlled areas under the agreement. IDF personnel observed several armed individuals exiting tunnels near them in northern Gaza and entering beneath rubble after an attack on what appeared to be a structure east of the line.
The military reported that two gunmen were eliminated by Air Force aircraft in this strike, while it is likely additional fighters died as well. Meanwhile, Hamas has been accused repeatedly of violating the ceasefire deal with Israel’s own troops, highlighting the complex dynamic shaping Gaza’s conflict.
Gaza health officials said at least 600 Palestinians have perished since the Gaza truce began, whereas Israel claims four soldiers were killed by Hamas militants during this period. The stark disagreement on casualty figures underscores the ongoing nature of violence in Gaza and the critical role of international observers seeking to broker a peaceful resolution.
Israel’s military continues its airstrikes while asserting adherence to agreements; Hamas, in turn, justifies its actions as retaliatory strikes in defense of its people. As the conflict enters yet another cycle, both sides struggle to find ways out from under the shadow of violence and accusations, mirroring a complex web of violations that have plagued Gaza for years.
