Pakistan Hosts D-8 Commissioners Retreat in Lahore

The Government of Pakistan recently convened the Informal Retreat of D-8 Commissioners in Lahore, providing a unique platform for member states to strategize and advance their cooperation. This important session took place from February 5th through 6th, 2026, amid growing ambitions for strengthening economic ties and cultural exchanges within the region.

The gathering was attended by all key players from D-8 member countries, including Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Türkiye, and Pakistan. The Secretary-General of D-8, Ambassador Sohail Mahmood, also participated in this critical meeting.

During their stay, the D-8 delegates engaged in open discussions with the D-8 Secretariat to outline practical strategies for enhancing cooperation and promoting the institution’s effectiveness. These talks aimed to accelerate the fulfillment of D-8 priorities and ongoing initiatives.

The informal visit was punctuated by a series of cultural and historical visits. The group toured historic sites like Wagah Border, Shalimar Gardens, Lahore Fort (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), and Badshahi Mosque. Notably, they also experienced the vibrant Basant festival at the Poonch House, a culturally significant venue in Lahore.

Senior officials from Punjab’s government, including Ms Maryam Aurangzeb, Senior Minister of Punjab, and Syed Ashaq Hussain Kirmani, Provincial Minister for Agriculture and Livestock, extended warm welcomes to the foreign dignitaries. Their support underscored Pakistan’s commitment to fostering a conducive environment for cooperation.

The D-8 delegates expressed their satisfaction with the successful conduct of the Retreat. They thanked the Government of Pakistan for its hospitality and applauded the smooth organizational arrangements. The participants also reaffirmed their commitments to bolstering cultural interactions, economic collaboration, and people-to-people exchanges among member states.

This Informal Retreat underscored Pakistan’s pivotal role in fostering regional integration and shared prosperity within the D-8 framework.
