Pakistan Voices “Deep Concern” Over Middle East Tensions

Pakistan’s Foreign Office expressed profound unease over the unfolding events in the Middle East, particularly following Iran’s recent attack, believed to be in retaliation for a suspected Israeli strike on its consulate in Syria, which resulted in the deaths of top Revolutionary Guards commanders on April 1.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Foreign Office underscored Pakistan’s longstanding advocacy for international efforts aimed at preventing the escalation of hostilities in the region and emphasized the urgent need for a ceasefire in Gaza.

“For months, Pakistan has underlined the necessity of international efforts to prevent the expansion of hostilities in the region and for a ceasefire in Gaza,” the FO said in a statement.

Iran issued a stark warning to Israel and the United States, cautioning of a significantly larger response to any retaliation for its recent drone and missile strike on Israeli territory. Israel, in turn, declared that the campaign was ongoing, fueling concerns of further escalation.

The prospect of a full-fledged conflict between the historic adversaries of the Middle East, potentially involving the United States, has left the region on edge. While affirming that America sought no confrontation with Iran, Washington reiterated its commitment to safeguarding its forces and supporting Israel.

On April 2, Pakistan condemned the attack on the Iranian consular office in Syria as a severe escalation in an already volatile region, highlighting the ramifications of diplomatic breakdowns. The Foreign Office underscored the urgent need for the UN Security Council to fulfill its mandate of maintaining international peace and security.

“Today’s developments demonstrate the consequences of the breakdown of diplomacy. These also underline the grave implications in cases where the UN Security Council is unable to fulfill its responsibilities of maintaining international peace and security,” it said.
