PHF Lifts Ban on Ammad Butt, Promises Fresh Start for Pakistan Hockey

Just a day after a two-year ban was imposed on Pakistan’s national hockey team captain Ammad Butt due to allegations over poor accommodations during their tour in Australia, the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) announced its interim president Mohyuddin Wani has lifted the suspension. The move signals a significant shift in tone as the federation aims to stabilize after recent turmoil.

The ban was initially imposed following PHF chief Tariq Bugti’s resignation amid allegations of inadequate support for the team, leading to players struggling with accommodation issues and delays in allowances during their stay in Hobart, Australia. The situation drew immediate criticism from Butt, who publicly criticized both the federation and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s decision to order an inquiry into the tour.

Wani’s announcement comes amidst a broader effort by the federation to reorganize itself. He emphasized the importance of players focusing on training and matches as they move forward with new leadership. IPC federal secretary also supported this initiative, committing to transparent and fair governance during the restructuring process.

Wani highlighted that improved management and partnerships with private sector entities would ensure better financial support for national athletes. In an effort to restore hockey’s prominence in Pakistan, he stressed the need for a revival of the sport and highlighted the significance of addressing past failures.

As the federation reorients itself under Wani’s leadership, it appears to be making strides towards rebuilding trust among its stakeholders, including players who had been vocal about their grievances. The upcoming elections for new permanent leadership will play a crucial role in shaping the future direction of the PHF and ensuring that hockey remains at the forefront of national sports interests.
