PIA raises fuel surcharge 34% amid Gulf crisis

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is facing significant financial challenges as fuel costs have surged by 34% due to crises in the Gulf region. A spokesperson for PIA announced on Thursday that domestic flights will see a $20 increase in surcharges, while international routes could face up to an additional $100 per flight. In response to these higher expenses and operational disruptions, PIA has canceled over 165 flights in the past week.

The spokesperson emphasized that this surge in costs is attributed to oil price volatility, specifically linked to the ongoing conflict between Iran and the United States. Brent crude oil prices have risen significantly to around $100 per barrel on Thursday, nearing a record high of $1,633 last Monday.

Moreover, air routes connecting Pakistan with the Middle East have been severely impacted by regional tensions, leading to the cancellation of more than 500 flights over the past three days. This disruption has affected thousands of stranded passengers and has also hampered PIA’s international operations.

The situation is not unique to PIA; a broader impact on global airline sectors is evident as six airlines from Qatar, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates have canceled approximately 2,381 flights daily over the last week. This has resulted in about 23,810 total cancellations during this period.

The conflict escalating between these countries has created a ripple effect across the airline industry globally, highlighting how regional instability can severely disrupt international travel and commercial operations.
