Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced on Sunday the complete elimination of the PTV licence fee from electricity bills nationwide—a move expected to provide financial relief to millions of households.

The announcement was made during the launch of the “Power Smart Mobile App” in Islamabad, where the Prime Minister also unveiled the “Apna Meter, Apni Reading” initiative, a new digital platform that allows electricity consumers to upload their own meter readings for more accurate billing.

“This initiative is a step toward empowering electricity consumers,” said Shehbaz. “Now every user will be able to upload their own meter reading through the app and receive an accurate bill.”

The rollout is part of a broader push to bring transparency and efficiency to a power sector often criticised for inflated bills and poor service delivery. By reducing dependence on manual readings, the government hopes to curb longstanding issues with overbilling.

Shehbaz also highlighted progress in reducing electricity prices. A Rs4.50 per unit tariff cut has been achieved through negotiations with Independent Power Producers (IPPs), while declining global oil prices have allowed for a further Rs7.50 per unit reduction. He noted that although there were projections of a 50 to 70 paisa hike due to annual adjustments, the government opted against increasing rates.

The Prime Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to tackling electricity theft, which he described as a major challenge. He added that the continued promotion of solar energy is helping to reduce pressure on the national grid.

The reforms are being positioned as a step toward consumer empowerment and long-term sustainability in Pakistan’s energy sector.
