PM to be elected on Sunday

The National Assembly of Pakistan is set to embark on the crucial task of electing the nation’s next prime minister on Sunday, March 3, as per the schedule unveiled on Thursday.

According to the announced timeline, contenders vying for the prime ministerial position will file their nomination papers on Saturday, March 2, followed by a meticulous scrutiny process slated to conclude by 3pm on the same day.

On Sunday, the National Assembly will convene for the decisive session, where Members of the National Assembly (MNAs) will cast their votes to determine the new head of government.

The ruling coalition, spearheaded by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and comprising six parties, has put forward Shehbaz Sharif as its nominee for the prime ministerial candidacy. However, standing in his path is Omar Ayub Khan of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

Adding intrigue to the electoral contest, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has thrown its weight behind Shehbaz Sharif, albeit without any demands for ministerial portfolios or participation in the government setup.

With the National Assembly housing a total of 336 members, a candidate must secure at least 169 votes to clinch the prime ministerial seat. Notably, the ruling coalition already commands a formidable majority, boasting a collective tally of at least 208 votes.
