A high-level committee, led by Federal Minister for Communications, Railways, and Maritime Affairs Shahid Ashraf Tarar, convened in Karachi to scrutinize security arrangements for the upcoming general elections. The caretaker Prime Minister had constituted this committee for overseeing election security.
The meeting, attended by Chief Secretary Sindh Dr. Muhammad Fakhre Alam, caretaker Provincial Home Minister Brigadier (Retd) Haris Nawaz, ACS Home Muhammad Iqbal Memon, Director General Rangers Major General Azhar Waqas, IG Sindh Riffat Mukhtar Raja, and representatives of the Pakistan Army, conducted a comprehensive review of the security plans for the impending elections.
Federal Minister Shahid Ashraf Tarar emphasized the committee’s primary goal of ensuring the security and peaceful conduct of the 2024 general elections. He underscored the importance of adhering to the directives of the Election Commission of Pakistan for transparent and organized elections.
Tarar also informed about the establishment of an Election Cell within the Federal Interior Ministry to supervise the secure execution of elections, involving representatives from all law enforcement agencies.Chief Secretary Sindh presented detailed information on election preparations during the meeting, highlighting the damages caused to schools in the province due to recent floods. Funds amounting to 1.5 billion rupees were allocated for school repairs, and an additional 3 billion rupees were earmarked for enhancing facilities in polling stations for the elections.
In terms of security measures, DG Rangers Sindh Major General Azhar Waqas announced the recruitment of 10,000 Rangers personnel for the general elections.
IG Sindh, in his briefing, disclosed that 122,000 police officers would be deployed to ensure security during the electoral process.
