Pokodia Surpasses Pokémon on Metacritic for Highest Rating

Pokémon Pokopia has made a splash on Nintendo Switch, earning critical acclaim since its launch. This spin-off ventures beyond the traditional creature-collecting and battling format that defines the Pokémon franchise, instead opting for a life simulation approach, blending elements reminiscent of Animal Crossing, Stardew Valley, and Minecraft.

At the center is Ditto, the shape-shifting Pokémon who appears in human form within this game’s setting. The narrative takes place in the Kanto region, which has been largely abandoned following an unspecified disaster. Players assume control over Ditto to rebuild the environment by constructing homes and habitats designed to attract other Pokémon back.

The core storyline centers on trainers—traditionally the focal point of Pokémon titles—who have mysteriously disappeared in this game. The game introduces a fresh take by focusing not on these traditional players, but instead on a character with unique abilities that reflect the franchise’s innovative spirit.

Reviewers have praised Pokopia for its creative vision and execution. Jordan Middler from Video Games Chronicle lauded it as “an excellent life simulation game that takes the best bits from the champions of the genre,” offering his work in five stars. Eurogamer writer Lottie Lynn called it “one of the best Pokémon spin-offs ever,” highlighting the character of Ditto and the depth the developers imbued into managing the world.

Rebekah Valentine from IGN gave it a nine out of 10 rating, emphasizing her love for the quirky protagonist. Despite these accolades, some critics have noted that Pokopia’s gameplay could become repetitive if not managed well enough to stand out among its influences. Stacy Henley of TheGamer summarized this perspective succinctly with her “good enough” description.

Pokopia now stands at 88 out of 100 on Metacritic, aligning it as the highest-rated Pokémon game ever released and coinciding with the franchise’s 30th anniversary celebration through new products and events. The game was conceived by Shigeru Ohmori, director for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, who saw an opportunity to offer fans a sandbox-style game with familiar elements.

Developed in collaboration between Game Freak, Koei Tecmo’s Omega Force division, and under the guidance of both Pokémon Company and Koei Tecmo. Kanako Murata took on production duties alongside concept creation and senior leadership roles for Ohmori.

The game was unveiled at a Nintendo Direct event held in September 2025, with its release slated for March 5, 2026. According to Metacritic’s review aggregation site, 94% of critics recommended the title overall. It has positioned itself as a standout entry within the Pokémon franchise, showcasing innovation and depth that fans have eagerly awaited.

For Eurogamer writer Lottie Lynn, who found Pokopia similarly strange yet compelling compared to other spin-offs, it is indeed one game that combines elements from Animal Crossing and Minecraft into an engaging narrative framework.
