PSG stun Chelsea 5-2 in dramatic UCL last 16 clash

In an electrifying Champions League last-16 match, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) stunned title holders Chelsea with a 5-2 victory at home. The win came as no surprise given PSG’s resurgence and Chelsea’s struggles in recent weeks.

The drama began when Brad Barcola’s early goal for the French side was canceled out by Malo Gusto. Just before halftime, Ousmane Dembele scored PSG’s second with a sublime finish, taking them ahead 2-1. However, their lead didn’t last long as Enzo Fernandez equalized on Chelsea’s own right flank.

The game took an unexpected turn when Filip Jorgensen inadvertently helped out the hosts by sending the ball to Vitinha for a spectacular lob goal, which made it 3-2 in PSG’s favor. Just four minutes from full time, substitute Khvicha Kvaratskhelia delivered another knockout blow with his audacious strike, leaving Chelsea seemingly on their way to conceding an unexpected defeat.

PSG’s resilience continued when Kvaratskhelia completed the rout with a brilliant finish after Achraf Hakimi’s assist in stoppage time. The late goals left Chelsea looking unlikely to salvage anything from the return leg at home next Tuesday.

The win marked PSG’s comeback as they sought revenge for their 3-0 thrashing against Chelsea in last July’s Club World Cup final. Nine of Chelsea’s starting lineup, including Jorgensen and Fofana, had played together then, but now faced a different coach in Liam Rosenior, who succeeded Enzo Maresca.

This victory was particularly rewarding as it provided PSG with some much-needed redemption after struggling to maintain their form since the exhausting Club World Cup campaign. Despite just two wins in seven European matches, PSG showed renewed vigor here against Chelsea, demonstrating they were still capable of competing at this elite level despite recent issues.

PSG’s goalkeepers, notably Matfei Safonov who suffered a costly error on 28 minutes, have struggled with decision-making under Jorgensen. Meanwhile, Dembele, their star player, had played only four full matches in his league appearances this season and was visibly energized by the opportunity to score against Chelsea.

In stark contrast to PSG’s resurgence, Chelsea appeared lackadaisical throughout much of the game. Their starting lineup featured nine players who participated in the 3-0 final earlier that year, but they were now dealing with new management led by Rosenior. Fofana expressed optimism for next week’s return match at Stamford Bridge, acknowledging their potential exit from Europe might be inevitable.

PSG’s resurgence underlined that they are still capable of competing on an international stage and could continue their impressive form going forward. The win also served as a reminder of the challenges facing Chelsea as they try to navigate through the Champions League qualifiers after such a significant defeat earlier in the year.
