The Punjab government has achieved a breakthrough in combating severe smog by successfully creating artificial rain using local technology. The cloud seeding experiment, conducted in Jhelum, Gujar Khan, Chakwal, and Talagang, resulted in rainfall within hours in Jhelum and Gujar Khan.

This innovative initiative was a joint effort involving the Punjab government, the Pakistan Army’s Scientific Research and Development division, Army Aviation, PARCO, and the Environmental Protection Agency.

The operation aims to mitigate the intense smog that has caused poor visibility, respiratory health risks, and disruptions such as school closures in Lahore, Multan, and other regions. Lahore, home to 14 million people, remains one of the most polluted cities globally, with record pollution levels this month.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif commended the project, emphasizing its potential to address weather challenges and foster technological progress in Pakistan.
