Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that this World Cup marks the end of his international career, stating he leaves with no regrets ahead of Portugal’s last-16 clash against Spain in Dallas on Monday.
The 41-year-old, playing at a record sixth World Cup, made the comment during a press conference where he insisted he would conclude his trophy-laden career on his own terms. “Let this be my last World Cup; it is my last World Cup, and I hope tomorrow won’t be my last match,” he said before leaving to applause from journalists.
Ronaldo had previously refused to confirm the tournament would be his final, stating that he will finish when he chooses. Despite being 45 at the next tournament in 2030, Ronaldo insists he is not drawing attention to this issue and emphasizes playing well for Portugal’s sake.
“I’m going to be perfectly honest, regardless of what happens tomorrow, Cristiano is going to be leaving with a clear conscience,” said a source close to the player. “I have given all I could to football; it’s my passion to play for so many years. I didn’t do it out of need, but I’m doing well out of life. It’s about passion.”
Ronaldo has scored three goals in this tournament and is confident his team can defeat Spain, who he believes are improving as the finals progress.
“If we didn’t have this belief we wouldn’t be here,” he said. “It’s been a beautiful experience; we’re getting better in every match. We know it’s a tough competition and it’s impossible to always do well.”
Ronaldo will make his 233rd appearance for Portugal if he plays against Spain, a nation with which he has a close connection due to his time at Real Madrid.
His record against the Spanish is limited, with only four goals scored including a hat-trick in a 2018 World Cup group phase draw. Despite this, Ronaldo believes playing against Spain will be enjoyable and that Portugal’s preparation will give them an edge.
