London’s incumbent Labour mayor, Sadiq Khan, has clinched a historic third term victory, comfortably surpassing his Conservative rival Susan Hall.
Khan, 53, the son of Pakistani immigrants, initially made waves in 2016 as the first Muslim mayor of a major Western city. Now, he’s etched his name in London’s political history by becoming the capital’s first leader to secure three terms since the mayoral post’s inception in 2000.
With over a million votes, translating to nearly 44% of the total vote share, Khan’s triumph stands more than 11 percentage points ahead of his closest contender, Hall. While Khan performed admirably in inner London, he faced challenges in some outer boroughs.
Despite frenzied speculation anticipating a closer race, Khan’s substantial lead signals a notable shift from Conservative to Labour support compared to the 2021 mayoral election.
