Senate vote in Sindh begins as PTI sits out

Voting for the vacant Senate seat from Sindh began Tuesday morning, with polling set to continue uninterrupted until 4:00pm within the Sindh Assembly premises.

The Election Commission has confirmed that all logistical and security measures are in place to ensure a smooth and transparent process.

The vacancy was created following the passing of Senator Taj Haider, a veteran figure in the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). In the race to fill the seat, the PPP has nominated Waqar Mehdi, while the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) is fielding Nighat Mirza.

Voting strength in the assembly favours the PPP, which holds 116 seats, compared to MQM’s 36. However, the electoral dynamic has been altered by the decision of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) – aligned independents to boycott the vote. PTI’s parliamentary leader in Sindh, Shabbir Ali Qureshi, confirmed that no members affiliated with the party would participate in the by-election.
