Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has condemned calls for dividing his province and separating Karachi, reaffirming Sindh’s pivotal role in the creation of Pakistan and staunchly defending provincial unity. Speaking at the Sindh Assembly, he criticized “enemies of Pakistan” behind such divisive rhetoric.
Murad Ali Shah pointed out that these statements were not new, recalling a similar resolution passed by the Sindh Assembly in 1994 to safeguard the province’s integrity against threats to national unity. He stressed that when Karachi was declared the capital in 1948 without a constitution, decisions now require a two-thirds majority from the Sindh Assembly.
The chief minister emphasized that the current resolution is focused on upholding Sindh’s unity and separate discussions can be held for administrative issues related to Karachi. He argued that opposing this resolution effectively means supporting a division of Sindh.
Murad Ali Shah urged all lawmakers to carefully consider the resolution before expressing objections, noting it does not target any political party or individual. Drawing on history, he highlighted that after British occupation, Sindh was distinct but later rejoined Pakistan under its Bombay Presidency. He also referenced President Asif Ali Zardari’s “Pakistan Khappay” slogan, reiterating that the Pakistan Peoples Party would never oppose national unity.
Murad Ali Shah concluded by warning against any attempts to divide Sindh, asserting that such plans would fail and reaffirming his commitment to maintaining provincial solidarity.
