SHC Halts Government Purchase of Double-Cabin Vehicles for Assistant Commissioners

The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Friday halted the provincial government’s plan to purchase 138 double-cabin vehicles for Assistant Commissioners (ACs) following a petition filed by Jamaat-e-Islami MPA Muhammad Farooq. The petition argued that the acquisition of SUVs is unnecessary and a misuse of public funds, given the current economic challenges.

After hearing both sides, the court suspended the Sindh government’s notification regarding the vehicle purchase and requested the provincial government, chief secretary, finance secretary, and the Board of Revenue to submit responses within four weeks.

The petition emphasized that the country’s economy is under pressure and taxpayer money should be allocated toward public welfare, healthcare, and education instead of luxury vehicle purchases. The petitioner urged the court to direct the funds towards welfare projects instead.
