Shiffrin Misses Podium in Winter Olympics Giant Slalom

Mikaela Shiffrin’s quest for another Olympic medal in women’s giant slalom at the 2026 Winter Olympics alpine skiing competition in Milano Cortina was a step forward rather than a leap, as she finished 11th. The American star described her performance as a powerful stride on her comeback journey.

A two-time Olympic gold medallist and eight-time world champion, Shiffrin arrived in Italy aiming for a third Olympic gold medal and further solidifying her legacy. She holds the record for most World Cup wins by any alpine skier, both male and female, and remains the only athlete to reach 100 victories on the circuit.

Despite this finish, the performance carries significant weight given the adversity Shiffrin has faced over the past year. In November 2024, she crashed during a giant slalom race in her home country of Colorado, puncturing her abdomen and causing visible bleeding through her ski suit. This incident left her feeling traumatized and uncertain about her confidence on the slopes.

Returning to Olympic-level competition at the 2026 Winter Olympics alpine skiing programme marks a milestone in Shiffrin’s recovery journey. Her teammates Paula Moltzan and Nina O’Brien also competed, but fell short of the podium.

Though she did not contend for medals, Shiffrin maintained an optimistic outlook on her performance. “That was like the greatest show of giant slalom skiing that we’ve had in a really long time,” she said to U.S. Ski and Snowboard. “To do it at the Olympics where people actually have eyes on the sport is so cool to watch.”

Her comments highlight the competitive standard of the 2026 Winter Olympics alpine skiing field, where even fractions of seconds can determine medal positions.

Despite her latest performance, Shiffrin remains one of the most decorated athletes in the sport’s history. Beyond Olympic success, she has dominated the World Cup circuit for more than a decade and rewritten record books across various disciplines, including slalom and giant slalom.

Coverage of the Milano Cortina Games is available on NBC and USA Network via Peacock. As the 2026 Winter Olympics alpine skiing programme continues, all eyes will remain on Shiffrin—this time for her potential in the women’s slalom, which she traditionally excels in.
