The Punjab Assembly gears up for a historic showdown today as PML-N’s Maryam Nawaz and PTI-backed Rana Aftab compete for the provincial chief minister’s position.

If successful, Maryam Nawaz Sharif could become the first woman chief minister of Punjab, given PML-N’s clear majority in the House.

Both candidates’ nomination papers have been accepted, with PTI naming Rana Aftab as its new nominee following earlier nominee Mian Aslam Iqbal’s attempted arrest by provincial police.

The election is scheduled for 11:00 am today, with the swearing-in ceremony set for 2:00 pm at the Governor’s House.
