Islamabad to Get 100 Recharge Wells under CDA Water Plan, Boosting Efficiency

Capital Development Authority Plans Major Upgrade for Islamabad’s Water System

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has outlined plans to accelerate a series of short- and long-term measures aimed at improving the water supply system in Islamabad. These include the construction of approximately 100 rainwater recharge wells, 20 water storage tanks, and stricter enforcement of rooftop rainwater harvesting.

The decision-making process took place during a meeting held at CDA Headquarters on Wednesday, chaired by CDA Chairman and Chief Commissioner Islamabad Muhammad Ali Randhawa. Other attendees included CDA Board Member Planning and Design Dr Khalid Hafiz, Member Finance Tahir Naeem, Member Environment Esfandyar Baloch, DG Islamabad Water Imran Ali Zaidi, and other relevant officers.

The meeting discussed the progress of various water-related projects and initiatives in the federal capital. It was informed that work is underway on rehabilitating and upgrading waterworks, conduction pipelines, water treatment plants, and water pumps. The installation of a SCADA system and flow meters is also being implemented to introduce a modern monitoring mechanism for Islamabad’s water supply.

Rainwater storage and groundwater recharge were key focus areas. Officials stated that around 100 rainwater recharge wells would be constructed across the city to help raise groundwater levels and reduce wastage of rainwater. Additionally, approximately 20 water storage tanks would be built in different parts of the city for storing rainwater.

Rooftop rainwater harvesting has already been made mandatory under CDA building bylaws. Chairman Randhawa directed relevant authorities to ensure strict compliance with this requirement across the capital.

The meeting also reviewed the mechanism for water tanker services and public complaints. A dashboard-based system was established to improve tanker operations and address water-related complaints more effectively.

Progress on dam projects in Islamabad was discussed, including the completion of a feasibility study for Shahdra Dam and the design phase nearing its end. The feasibility study for Dotara Dam is also underway and expected to be completed by May 2026.

The establishment of three sewage treatment plants along Korang Nullah was reviewed, with the project executed on an EPC basis and the process to hire a design consultant under way. The PC-I for 11 wetlands in Islamabad has been approved, while site selection is ongoing, with work already begun on two wetlands in collaboration with FDO.

Randhawa directed departments concerned to ensure clear timelines for all water-related projects and initiatives to prevent delays. He also ordered the establishment of a mechanism to ensure bills are delivered every month without delay.
