Scientists Discover Walking Adjustment May Ease Arthritis Pain

A new study suggests a simple walking tweak may offer relief for those suffering from knee osteoarthritis. Researchers found in a year-long clinical trial that slightly altering the angle of one’s foot while walking reduced knee pain as effectively as common medications and slowed cartilage damage.

Arthritis is prevalent among older adults, with nearly one in four over 40 living with painful osteoarthritis. The condition can make everyday movement challenging and is a leading cause of disability in adults.

Currently, treatment focuses on pain relief, with joint replacement often necessary when symptoms become severe. However, the new study from researchers at the University of Utah, New York University, and Stanford University indicates that changing one’s walking pattern may provide an alternative approach to managing osteoarthritis symptoms and potentially slowing joint damage.
