Slot warns Liverpool need near-perfect finish for Champions League berth

Liverpool’s Head Coach Arne Slot acknowledged on Tuesday that his team had fallen short of their own standards, let alone those set by defending champions Liverpool. Currently sixth in the Premier League standings, four points from a top-five spot that guarantees Champions League qualification for next season, it has been an underwhelming start to the campaign.

The Reds’ recent form has not been encouraging either. They have managed just six victories in their last 20 league matches dating back to September, and only one win out of seven in 2026. The team’s struggles were further highlighted by a disappointing performance against Manchester City on Sunday, losing narrowly 2-1.

Slot’s comments before Liverpool’s upcoming match against Sunderland revealed the team’s inner turmoil. “They understand what it means to be at the level of Liverpool,” Slot said. “Right now, we aren’t performing up to their standards.” He continued, “Every game feels like there’s a chance for us to win, but ultimately, we don’t manage to close that gap.”

With leaders Arsenal and Manchester City likely vying for the league title, only three teams are still within reach of securing Champions League spots from four potential candidates. Aston Villa stand at eight points clear, followed closely by in-form Manchester United (fourth) and Chelsea (fifth).

Slot’s comments underscored the challenge ahead. “To cut that gap to third, fourth, or fifth, means you need to win many games,” Slot pointed out. “But this season we haven’t delivered results close to what we needed.”

Dominik Szoboszlai’s suspension due to a red card adds another layer of complexity to Slot’s selection process. With injuries preventing defenders Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong, only Joe Gomez has returned from injury. Therefore, one of the midfielders Curtis Jones or Wataru Endo will start in defense against Sunderland, who hold the best unbeaten home record in the league this season.

Slot’s acknowledgment highlights Liverpool’s plight as they navigate a challenging season, struggling to match their own lofty standards and find consistency on the pitch.
