SpaceX recently announced its acquisition of artificial coding assistant Cursor for $60 billion in stock, according to a securities filing on Tuesday. According to the deal, Cursor will become a wholly-owned subsidiary upon closing in Q3 2026.
Founded by San Francisco-based startup Anysphere in 2022, Cursor helped spark a trend known as “vibe coding” where AI coding tools can autonomously produce computer software. The platform bills itself as a “coding agent for building ambitious software.”
The acquisition comes after SpaceX raised $75 billion in its IPO last Friday and shares rose 5% in pre-market trading to $202.11.
Elon Musk’s company also alluded to the deal on April X account, stating it was working with Cursor to create the “world’s best coding and knowledge work AI.” At the time of the announcement, Cursor said teaming up with SpaceX subsidiary xAI would enable it to build future software products using xAI’s AI data center complex in Memphis, Tennessee.
