Spain Closes Airspace to US Military Over Iran Attacks
Spanish Defence Minister Margarita Robles announced on Monday that Spain will close its airspace to US planes involved in attacks on Iran. This decision goes beyond her previous denial of using jointly-operated military bases.
The closure forces military planes to bypass NATO member Spain en route to their targets in the Middle East, according to Spanish newspaper El Pais. However, it does not include emergency situations.
Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo stated that this decision aligns with the Spanish government’s stance against a war initiated unilaterally and against international law. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has been vocal in opposing US and Israeli attacks on Iran, calling them reckless and illegal. President Donald Trump has threatened to cut trade with Spain for denying US use of its bases during the conflict.
