Sri Lanka’s Pathum Nissanka Leads Side to Super Eights Spot as Australia Sees T20 World Cup Endings

In a nail-biting T20 World Cup match, Sri Lanka’s Pathum Nissanka delivered the decisive blow by scoring an impressive century against Australia to secure his team’s spot in the Super Eights. With only two overs remaining, Sri Lanka chased down 181 with ease, securing victory by eight wickets.

Pathum Nissanka showcased a remarkable display of batting prowess, slamming five sixes and ten fours as he stroked an unbeaten 100 off 52 balls. Joining him was Kusal Mendis, who contributed to the second-wicket stand that laid a solid foundation for Sri Lanka’s win.

This victory sent shockwaves through the tournament, especially given Australia’s current scenario. If Zimbabwe defeated Ireland or Sri Lanka in their upcoming matches on Tuesday and Thursday, Australia would be pushed towards elimination, potentially with net run rate considerations if Zimbabwe were to lose both games.

Already having made a powerful impression before this World Cup, Pathum Nissanka has now added another feather to his cap by scoring two hundreds in T20 internationals. His performances have been bolstered by the teamwork of Kusal Mendis and Pavan Rathnay, who put on 76 runs off just 34 balls.

Nissanka’s innings was marked by both audacity and elegance; he effortlessly executed his cover drives against spinners while employing elegant flicks to counter Australia’s quick bowlers. Prior to this tournament, Sri Lanka had suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of England but have since surged back with three straight victories.

Australia’s progress has been marred by injuries, notably that of their captain Mitchell Marsh, who returned and led an assault scoring 54 in their initial match, pairing well with Travis Head for a crucial opening partnership worth 104 runs off 51 balls. Despite Australia’s early surge, Sri Lanka’s slow bowling unit proved pivotal, restricting them to just 181, with leg-spinner Dushan Hemantha taking three wickets and contributing significantly to the chase.

Australia’s performance flagged as they struggled to convert their opportunities into quick runs; in a span of 24 balls, they lost all six of their last wickets for only 21 runs. This loss brought Sri Lanka closer to reaching the Super Eights stage, while Australia continues on a precarious path that could lead them out of contention unless they secure decisive victories in their remaining matches.

Sri Lanka’s journey shows resilience and skill, with this match further cementing their status as a strong contender for success in the 2026 T20 World Cup.
