Ben Stokes backs Harry Brook for England Test captaincy

Harry Brook was Ben Stokes’s vice-captain in the red-ball series against New Zealand, which ended 2-1 loss on Monday. However, Brook was overlooked for the second test when Stokes was omitted from the team due to disciplinary reasons.

Stokes said, “There is a reason why he was asked to be vice-captain of this team.” He praised Brook’s talent and potential, stating that more responsibility could further improve him. Stokes offered his full support for Brook to take on the captaincy role.

England coach Brendon McCullum, who also wants to continue in the post despite the side losing seven of their last nine tests, did not endorse Brook. He said they need time to decide and will consider strong leaders within the team.

Brook, ranked second in the world Test batting rankings, is an automatic selection but has faced criticism for indiscipline on and off the pitch. A reprimand from the Cricket Regulator followed a New Zealand incident where he was struck by a bouncer after being refused entry to a nightclub the night before a one-day international.

McCullum tried to persuade Stokes not to step down mid-match at Trent Bridge, but Stokes insisted it was the right time for him to move on.
