Three cases have been registered in Karachi over protests near the US Consulate following the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The incidents unfolded at a significant scale and garnered attention both domestically and internationally.

The Sindh Police filed three charges against unidentified individuals, including murder, attempted murder, terrorism, and rioting. A complaint was lodged by Inspector Nand Lal to the Docks Police Station. According to an FIR (First Information Report), the gathering near the US Consulate on Sunday swelled to a crowd numbering between 150 to 200 people, with some individuals allegedly entering consulate premises.

While local sources have charged that American Marines fired upon demonstrators who had stormed the site, British media reported different circumstances. Reuters has highlighted this unusual incident in an unfolding diplomatic standoff exacerbated by nationwide protests following Ayatollah Khamenei’s death.

The US authorities, as per their preliminary assessment, remain unclear about whether any protesters were hit or if casualties occurred among them. They also lack information on the roles of security personnel protecting the consulate, including private contractors and local law enforcement units who may have taken action in the chaos that ensued.

This situation has garnered particular significance given Pakistan’s second-largest Shia population after Iran—a demographic context that likely heightened tensions at the US Consulate protest. As a response to the escalating nationwide protests post-Ayatollah Khamenei’s death, authorities imposed a nationwide ban on public gatherings.

The incident underlines Pakistan’s fraught diplomatic environment and underscores how international incidents can have profound local repercussions. The country faces ongoing challenges amid regional dynamics where public sentiment towards Iran continues to simmer with varying degrees of support for the late Ayatollah Khamenei within its populace.
