US President Donald Trump expressed optimism about reaching a deal with Iran despite Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warning of a regional war. After the Iranian leader criticized U.S. rhetoric regarding anti-government protests, Trump told reporters that “Of course he is going to say that,” before stating, “Hopefully we’ll make a deal.”
Following the recent surge in protests in Iran, which authorities have termed a “coup” instigated by the United States and Israel, tensions between Tehran and Washington escalated. Khamenei warned of a broad conflict if an attack were launched against Iran.
“Iranian leaders described the recent demonstrations as a ‘coup,’ with protesters targeting police centers, government facilities, IRGC positions, banks, and mosques,” Khamenei said. “It was like a coup that was suppressed.”
In response to Trump’s threat of military action, Khamenei added, “The Americans should know that if they start a war, this time it will be a regional war,” advising Iranians not to fear the U.S. leader’s rhetoric.
Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi expressed concern but believed Trump could make the right decision regarding negotiations. He acknowledged losing trust in the United States as an ally and suggested that other nations in the region might mediate to rebuild trust.
“So I see the possibility of another talk if the US negotiation team follows what President Trump said: to come to a fair and equitable deal,” Araghchi said, adding, “to ensure there are no nuclear weapons.”
