Trump, Modi Discuss Trade & Indian Sailor Safety at G7 Summit in France

US President Donald Trump stated on Wednesday he had a “very good” conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the G7 summit in France. Their two countries are working on trade deals.

Trump described Modi as a “tough negotiator,” and said he would visit India “sometime in the future.” This is the first meeting between the leaders since February 2025, when Modi visited Washington shortly after Trump returned to the White House. At that time, both sides agreed to resolve their differences over trade and tariffs.

However, relations have deteriorated as Washington has imposed high tariffs on Indian goods for purchasing Russian oil and closely cooperates with India’s rival Pakistan. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited India last month to mend ties, but recent attacks by the US Navy on commercial ships in the Gulf have reignited tensions.

Modi told reporters that the safety of Indian seafarers working in the Strait of Hormuz is “of utmost importance” to New Delhi. Trump acknowledged the sailors’ dangerous profession and said the US would defend India if it were attacked, adding he would be there for Modi as well.
