US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that he was collaborating with Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry to deploy a specialized hospital vessel to Greenland, a Danish territory. The move follows Trump’s expressed interest in acquiring the island.
Trump made this announcement on social media right before hosting a dinner for Republican governors at the White House. He sat next to and conversed with Landry about their plan.
“Working with the fantastic Governor of Louisiana, Jeff Landry, we are going to send a great hospital boat to Greenland,” Trump said. “We want to take care of the many people who are sick but aren’t being properly attended to there.”
Neither the White House nor Landry’s office provided any response regarding this social media post or whether such a ship had been requested by Denmark or Greenland, where they would be needed.
Meanwhile, Danish King Frederik made his second visit to Greenland in just over a year. This trip aimed to strengthen ties with the territory as Trump continues his efforts to acquire it.
Late last month, Greenland, Denmark, and the United States held discussions to address tensions that have arisen within NATO’s defense framework following months of disagreements.
The President’s social media announcement came less than 24 hours after a Danish Joint Arctic Command reported evacuating a crew member from an American submarine in Greenland’s territorial waters. The evacuation happened seven nautical miles away from Nuuk, the capital city of Greenland.
Neither the Danish nor US authorities have provided further details on this particular incident or their plans for dealing with similar situations moving forward.
