The soldier aboard managed to activate the ejection system at the last moment, a desperate attempt to escape his stricken aircraft. However, his life was lost in the subsequent crash. Authorities have not provided further details about the incident.
The wreckage of the F-16 model block 50 (1993) had been located during search and rescue efforts by Thursday evening. An investigation team will now conduct a thorough examination to determine the exact cause of the mishap.
This tragic event comes on the heels of other recent incidents involving F-16s, including one that crashed into the sea in Taiwan and another that ended with its pilot fatally injured while rehearsing for an air show in Poland. Turkish airspace has seen a series of such accidents recently, prompting heightened scrutiny over maintenance protocols and operational procedures.
In November, Turkey halted cargo flights by its C-130 planes after one crashed en route from Azerbaijan to Georgia, resulting in the loss of all 20 crew members on board.
