U.K. Stands Firm on Net-Zero Amid Iran War, Rejects Trump’s Oil Drilling Calls

Britain has announced plans to double its commitment to net-zero emissions targets amid energy volatility caused by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. This decision comes despite President Trump’s call for Britain to resume drilling for North Sea oil, a move that could potentially increase fossil fuel production and consumption.

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband emphasized the need for clean energy security, stating, “The era of fossil fuel security is over, and the era of clean energy security must come of age.” Prime Minister Keir Starmer echoed this sentiment, saying, “We need to get off the fossil fuel rollercoaster.”

Trump has been vocal in his support for increased oil production, urging Britain to resume drilling operations. However, analysts note that much of the North Sea’s natural resources have already been extracted, and new production would take years to materialize.

Oil prices dropped slightly as rumors spread about reopening the Strait of Hormuz but fell back as the ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran was set to expire.
