U.S. Secret Service Director Resigns Amid Pressure Following Attack on Trump’s Life

U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle has resigned after facing intense pressure from lawmakers following an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, according to three sources who spoke to NBC News.

A formal announcement of her resignation is expected later this morning, as reported by two law enforcement sources.

In her resignation letter, obtained from a senior official, Cheatle acknowledged the intense scrutiny faced over the past week and anticipated it would continue. “I take full responsibility for the security lapse,” she wrote, adding, “In light of recent events, it is with a heavy heart that I have made the difficult decision to step down as your Director.”

Cheatle’s decision follows a contentious session with lawmakers from both parties who were frustrated by the Secret Service’s failure to protect Trump. “I’m not going to get into specifics of the day,” Cheatle said during her testimony, citing an ongoing investigation. “There was a plan in place to provide overwatch, and we are still looking into responsibilities.”

Lawmakers from both sides criticized Cheatle for her “incompetence” and what they described as “lame excuses.” Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., sharply rebuked Cheatle, saying, “You’re full of s— today!” She accused Cheatle of dodging questions and being “completely dishonest” about her cooperation with the committee.

The House Oversight Committee, which held the hearing, was not satisfied with her responses. Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., and Ranking Member Jamie Raskin, D-Md., wrote to Cheatle after the hearing, criticizing her for failing to provide clear answers and reassurances about the Secret Service’s ability to correct its systemic issues.

The committee leaders stressed the need for “serious institutional accountability and transparency” from the Secret Service, especially in an election year. They called for Cheatle’s resignation to allow new leadership to address the crisis and restore trust with Congress and the American people.
