UEFA has announced an investigation into allegations of discriminatory behavior following Real Madrid’s win over Benfica in the Champions League. The news broke when Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior accused Benfica player Gianluca Prestianni of racially abusing him during Tuesday’s crucial first leg match.
The shocking incident occurred after Brazil international Vinicius scored a goal, which sparked an intense confrontation with Prestianni. As tensions escalated in the 50th minute, Real’s Trent Alexander-Arnold intervened by stopping play for almost ten minutes to allow UEFA officials to address the situation.
Vinicius was heard telling referee Francois Letexier that he had been called “mono,” the Spanish word for monkey, an insult meant as a racial slur. After being booked for celebrating in front of Benfica’s adoring fans, Prestianni defended his actions but admitted covering his mouth after allegedly yelling something at Vinicius.
Real’s Trent Alexander-Arnold described the incident as “disgusting” and called it “a disgrace for football.” He expressed that the night had been ruined for his team. Kylian Mbappe, France’s captain, added to the chorus of calls for Prestianni’s suspension from further Champions League involvement.
Prestianni has vehemently denied racially abusing Vinicius, while Benfica coach Jose Mourinho criticized Vinicius’ celebratory display as disrespectful and inconsiderate. British anti-discrimination body Kick It Out decried Mourinho’s comments as “gaslighting,” emphasizing the importance of addressing allegations of discrimination.
Kick It Out stated: “When anyone reports discrimination in football or anywhere, the first priority is that they are listened to and feel supported.” They further argued that focusing on Vinicius’ goal celebration or Benfica’s history instead of addressing Prestianni’s actions was a form of gaslighting. This not only harms those who have experienced similar situations but also sends the wrong message to others.
