UK Denies Entry to US Commentators Cenk Uygur and Hasan Piker for Criticizing Israel

London — Two prominent left-wing American political commentators, Cenk Uygur and Hasan Piker, have been denied entry into the UK for speaking at events, according to the British government’s assessment of potential risks they pose to public good.

Uygur, a co-creator of the Young Turks show, and Piker, known for his Twitch streams, were barred from entering the country ahead of their scheduled appearance at the SXSW London event. Uygur expressed frustration over being banned for criticizing Israel, while Piker stated that his visa was revoked on Israel’s behalf.

The Home Office confirmed to CBS News that both individuals were denied entry due to an assessment of potential risks they may pose to UK society. The decision cited a perceived risk of exacerbating antisemitism in the U.K., with Piker facing previous controversies over comments supporting Hamas and Uygur referring to Israeli actions in Gaza as “barbaric.”

The British Jewish charity Community Security Trust raised concerns about Piker’s participation, stating that public figures must not spread hatred or legitimize extremism. The group welcomed the government’s decision, emphasizing that consequences should be faced for hate speech.

In April, the U.K. raised its terrorism threat level to severe due to an increasing risk of extreme right-wing terrorism. British journalist Ash Sarhar accused the government of acting out of fear of being called antisemitic or criticized on Israel’s stance in Gaza. David Taylor, a member of the UK Parliament, praised the Home Office for not allowing hate and division into the country.

If Uygur and Piker wish to travel to the U.K., they can apply for visas but it is unlikely their cases will be reviewed in time for the event starting Monday. Remote appearances remain an option.”
