UK PM Starmer Proposes Ban on Harmful Social Media for Under-16s

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is set to announce a ban on “harmful” online platforms for children under 16. The decision comes after consultations with bereaved parents and evidence from Australia, which implemented such restrictions last December.

A Downing Street source stated that the prime minister is not hesitant about taking on tech companies to protect young people. However, a formal ban is unlikely this week.

The government may provide more details soon regarding efforts to prevent children from creating sexualized images online, which can be used for sextortion.

Concerns over social media’s impact on mental health and safety have prompted Britain to consider curfews, time limits, and restrictions on addictive design features. France, Denmark, Poland are also considering tightening rules, while Greece announced a ban for those under 15 in January 2027.

Starmer is expected to focus on how the government can ensure technology brings positive change when he speaks later this week. Britain’s existing online safety law requires social media companies to protect children from illegal and harmful content.
