In the northern part of South Sudan, violence has escalated over the past two days, leaving at least dozens dead. The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) expressed alarm regarding a surge in hostilities centered around Abiemnom county headquarters, situated near the border with Sudan.

Reports emerged that unidentified armed youths attacked the local government center on Sunday, resulting in the wounding of 23 individuals. According to UNMISS’s statement, they have also observed grave concerns about recent reports indicating that multiple civilians and some local officials have fallen victim to today’s conflict.

UNMISS emphasized that this surge in violence is particularly disturbing given previous conditions in Abiemnom area. The region has been fraught with tension for months, grappling with issues of governance and security. Authorities had initially hoped that these tensions could be managed peacefully through dialogue and improved community engagement, but the recent events seem to have dashed such hopes.

The UNMISS team dispatched additional resources to support local authorities and ensure a safe environment for residents. They are working closely with other international partners to address immediate humanitarian needs and facilitate calm in the region.

As the violence continues to unfold, there is mounting concern over how to restore stability and security in Abiemnom. The situation underscores South Sudan’s ongoing struggle with governance challenges and ethnic tensions that continue to plague its northern regions.
