In a strong condemnation, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) highlighted the heinous act of terrorism that struck Imambargah Khadijah al-Kubra in Islamabad on February 6, 2026. The attack left at least 36 people dead and 169 injured, with ISIL (Daesh) claiming responsibility.

Worshippers had gathered for Friday prayers when the suicide bomber detonated their explosive device, followed by additional blasts and gunfire. This heinous act not only claimed lives but also shattered hopes in a community that was seeking solace through religious gatherings.

Scores of global leaders and officials expressed their sorrow at the incident. A press statement from UNSC President James Kariuki echoed these sentiments: “The members of the Security Council condemned the terrorist attack, which resulted in the tragic loss of 32 Pakistani nationals and 92 injured individuals, in the strongest terms.”

They conveyed their sympathy to the families of the victims and extended well-wishes for those who were wounded. The UNSC reiterated its stance that terrorism endangers international peace and security. “Terrorism,” they emphasized, “constitutes one of the most serious threats to global stability.”

To ensure accountability, the Security Council reaffirmed that perpetrators, organizers, financiers, and sponsors would be held responsible. They urged states to cooperate with Pakistan in addressing this threat.

The UNSC underscored the universal nature of terrorism, regardless of its motivations or circumstances. Furthermore, they reiterated their commitment to combating such acts through all means available under international law, including human rights laws and humanitarian interventions.

As a response to this act of brutality, the world gathered together not only to mourn but also to reaffirm its resolve in confronting the scourge of terrorism that strikes at the very core of global security.
