Venice Mayor Proposes $59 Dynamic Fee for Tourists on Peak Days

Venice’s new mayor proposes dynamic pricing for access fee, potentially raising charge to $59 on busiest days. Simone Venturini aims to reduce overcrowding and cover maintenance costs, currently funded by Venetian residents through tourism taxes. Critics argue the current fee of about $11 is insufficient to deter visitors during peak times.

The proposal requires an amendment to Italy’s special law governing Venice, with discussions already underway with the tourism minister. While some oppose due to potential prohibitive cost for tourists, particularly families, Venturini maintains it as a maximum limit, allowing room for experimentation. The city’s resident population has dropped below 48,000, while tourist beds have risen to over 51,500, according to recent data from Ocio housing advocacy group.
