Veteran Indian Ghazal Singer Pankaj Udhas Passes Away at 73

Legendary Indian ghazal singer Pankaj Udhas, succumbed to a prolonged illness at the age of 73, as confirmed by his daughter Nayaab Udhas in an Instagram post.

In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Nayaab Udhas announced, “With a very heavy heart, we are saddened to inform you of the sad demise of Padmashri Pankaj Udhas on 26th February 2024 due to a prolonged illness.

Pankaj Udhas, renowned for his soul-stirring renditions of ghazals, captured the hearts of audiences not only in India but also across the globe with his mesmerizing voice.

Confirming the news of his passing, Pankaj’s representative revealed to The Indian Express, “Pankaj sir was suffering from a prolonged illness and wasn’t keeping well the last few days. He died this morning around 11 am at Breach Candy hospital.”

Born on May 17, 1951, in Gujarat, Pankaj Udhas rose to prominence during the 1980s and 1990s, emerging as one of India’s most beloved ghazal singers.

His repertoire included timeless classics such as “Chitthi Aayi Hai,” “Aur Aahista Kijiye Baatein,” “Chandi Jaisa Rang Hai Tera,” “Mein Nashe Mein Hoon,” “Chupke Chupke,” and “Na Kajre Ki Dhar,” among many others, earning him widespread acclaim and adoration.

Throughout his illustrious career, Pankaj Udhas received numerous awards and accolades, including the prestigious Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian honors, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the world of music and art.
