A chaotic melee during the final seconds of a Brazilian soccer match between Cruzeiro and Atletico Mineiro marred an already tense atmosphere. Twenty-three players received red cards as violence erupted from one end of the field toward another.

Former Brazil forward Hulk, who plays for Atletico, acknowledged his team’s mistake on Instagram. “What happened yesterday does not represent the values that soccer should embody,” he wrote. “Rivalry is part of the sport, but respect must always prevail over any emotion.”

The brawl began when Cruzeiro midfielder Christian engaged in a challenge with Atletico’s goalkeeper Everson during the final minutes. Everson retaliated by rugby-tackling and dropping his head onto Christian’s chest, leading to what turned into an all-out fight involving substitutes, coaching staff, and security personnel.

Video footage showed Hulk getting punched on the back of the head and subsequently kicked in the chest by another player while watching from a distance. The incident was captured across social media, bringing criticism from both teams.

“Atletico posted a statement via its social media platforms condemning any form of violence in football,” said the team. “Our athletes do not condone such acts.”

Cruzeiro also addressed the matter, stating that mutual aggression involving their players during Sunday’s Campeonato Mineiro final was recorded and regretted. The club reaffirmed its commitment to respect and fair play, announcing internal measures would be taken.

Despite the violence, Cruzeiro emerged victorious in their state championship game, defeating Atletico 1-0. Coach Tite expressed gratitude towards his team’s fans for their support after the win, emphasizing respect as the most important value. “I may lack competence at times,” he said, “but respect for our fans is what truly counts.”
