11 Dead, Dozens Injured in South Korea Factory Fire

South Korean car parts factory fire kills 11, injures dozens

Fire crews were initially unable to enter the Daejeon factory due to risk of collapse. Sodium stored on site can explode if mishandled.

Around 170 workers present when fire erupted at around 1pm Friday. Interior ministry official said 11 dead, 25 seriously injured; 34 with minor injuries and three missing.

Cause of fire not yet determined. Witness reported hearing explosion.

Fire extinguished by Saturday afternoon. President Lee Jae Myung ordered all resources mobilized for rescue operations.

Lee has called for better worker protections following a series of fatal workplace accidents in the country, including one in 2024 that killed 22 people, mostly Chinese nationals.
