The judicial hearing, presided over by Justice Malik Owais Khalid, involved discussions on petitions filed by the Judicial Activism Panel. These petitions sought comprehensive data regarding fatalities and injuries that occurred during the Basant celebrations. The panel’s arguments highlighted gaps in the official report, noting particularly the lack of detailed information about individuals injured by kite strings.

The report outlined several fatal incidents: three people died from electrocution, two perished after falling from trees, and 12 individuals lost their lives while attempting to participate in Basant-related activities atop rooftops. Counsel Azhar Siddique argued during the hearing that these data shortcomings were unacceptable; he insisted on receiving comprehensive information detailing all casualties.

Following this session, Justice Owais Khalid adjourned the matter until next week. He directed Punjab Home Secretary for providing complete details of those injured during the festival. The court’s decision underscored its commitment to ensuring transparency and accountability in such public events.
