James Van Der Beek, best remembered for his role as Dawson Leery in the beloved teen drama series “Dawson’s Creek,” passed away at the age of 48. His producer wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek, made the announcement on social media, confirming reports of her husband’s passing.

“Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning,” wrote Kimberly on Instagram. “He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace.”

“There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity, and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now, we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend,” she added.

Details surrounding Beek’s cause of death have not yet been released, but the actor had been battling colorectal cancer for years. When diagnosed in August 2023, he initially kept his condition under wraps, even as it was classified at Stage 3. He only publicly revealed his health struggles over a year later during an appearance on Today.

During this disclosure, Van Der Beek shared that he had been in remarkably good shape—frequently engaging in rigorous exercises like cold plunges and saunas—and did not initially suspect anything serious when experiencing symptoms. “I was so healthy,” he recalled, “and I was doing the cold plunges, and the saunas, and the intermittent fasting.” He only scheduled a colonoscopy after a doctor suggested it due to persistent discomfort.

“Going into shock wasn’t something that would have happened to me,” Van Der Beek mused. “I really didn’t think I had anything yet. Neither did my wife. And we drove home in silence.” Despite the grim news, he acknowledged a moment of panic followed by another part of his brain advising him: “You don’t know enough yet.”

Before facing cancer, Van Der Beek established himself on the stage, debuting in Edward Albee’s production “Finding the Sun” in 1993. That same year, he made his television debut as a drummer in Nickelodeon’s “Clarissa Explains It All.”

His film career also began with a significant role: playing Rick Sanford, a high school bully in Ang Lee’s “Angus.” Van Der Beek is known for having married twice and had six children together.

Van Der Beek’s legacy will be remembered not only as an accomplished actor but also for his dedication to raising a family. His unexpected passing has sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry, marking yet another loss in a profession where health crises often come unexpectedly.
