Artificial intelligence (AI) revolution aimed at efficiency and productivity in tech sector faces fiscal challenges. Companies like Uber and Microsoft grapple with unexpected AI-related costs, leading to budget burnout for 2026.

For instance, Microsoft rescinded its internal Claude code license and Experiences and Devices division’s access by June 30, 2026, due to unsustainable token-based billing consumption in six months since launch in December 2025. Engineers were advised to use GitHub Copilot CLI instead of Claude.

Uber also decided to scale back on AI technologies due to budget overruns caused by overconsumption. Uber’s Chief Technology Officer revealed the crisis as the company exhausted its $3.4 billion 2026 budget by April.

The surge in usage and API costs among engineers, ranging from $500 to $2000 monthly per engineer, contributed to the cost explosion. Nvidia Vice President of Applied Deep Learning also admitted that AI costs exceeded human-based costs.

Experts debate whether we are moving into a reality check phase as maintenance costs soar. Social media users echo concerns about the real cost problem and lack of discussion around it until now.
