John Davidson, a 54-year-old advocate for Tourette’s syndrome, let out involuntary shouts, drawing attention to the often overlooked condition that causes such severe symptoms.
The event was broadcast on BBC One and witnessed a brief lull as everyone around the auditorium fell silent, amplifying the sudden outbursts of laughter and swearing. A source from HELLO! later reported how “audience members exchanged visible shock with each other.”
Alan Cumming took to the stage in response, acknowledging the moment. He explained that strong language can be a part of Tourette’s syndrome for some individuals, referring to his own involvement with John Davidson’s film “I Swear.”
“I believe you may have noticed some strong language in the background,” Alan said on stage. “This is how Tourette’s syndrome sometimes presents itself within the film ‘I Swear,’ which delves into John’s early struggles with undiagnosed Tourette’s, the stigma he faced at school, and his journey toward acceptance and advocacy.”
Following Cumming’s acknowledgment, the host added, “We appreciate your understanding. We are here to create a respectful space for everyone, and we apologize if you are offended by our decisions during this event.”
“I Swear,” directed by Kirk Jones, received five nominations, including an award for best leading actor for Robert Aramayo, who triumphed in the category. The film captures John Davidson’s story from his earliest days with undiagnosed Tourette’s through his advocacy and journey towards acceptance.
