The much-anticipated Basant festival has been given a reprieve for another year. According to Azma Bukhari, the Provincial Minister for Information and Culture in Punjab, the event will return in February 2027 but is not currently scheduled for this year.
In a recent statement, Bukhari confirmed that although some cities, particularly Lahore, have held spontaneous Basant celebrations recently, planning with full safety measures has been a priority. The government aims to ensure participants’ well-being by adhering to legal requirements such as the registration of kite sellers and makers, and implementing safety measures like safety rods for motorcyclists.
The Deputy Commissioner (DC) will oversee all preparations, including ensuring metal strings and dangerous threads are banned. This central role involves meeting all legal requirements before Basant can be officially permitted.
While Basant has been celebrated informally in some cities in recent years, the government’s intention is to organize a safe and organized event for next year. The Deputy Commissioner will play a crucial part by ensuring that safety protocols are in place before granting permission.
The Home Department submitted a report to the Lahore High Court (LHC) addressing the petition for Basant celebrations across Punjab. This report emphasizes key steps necessary to ensure participant safety during the festival. Despite ongoing public demand, the government has made it clear that they will not allow Basant this year due to the need for thorough preparations and safety measures.
The legal proceedings involve a request from the government to dismiss the petition for immediate celebrations this year on the grounds of needing comprehensive safety protocols and planning. Once all legal and safety requirements are met, the DC Lahore will grant permission for Basant in February 2027.
