British actress Emaa Hussen, 34, faces charges of attempting to smuggle 700 pounds of methamphetamine into Australia from West Africa. The drugs were concealed in bags of charcoal loaded into shipping containers sent from Ghana. Hussen appeared in a Sydney court on Thursday and could face life imprisonment if convicted.
Australian Federal Police Acting Superintendent Trevor Robinson stated that the seizure has prevented up to 3.2 million drug deals from reaching Australian streets. Border Force Superintendent Jared Leighton added that officers are trained to detect such disguises used by criminal syndicates.
The investigation began in April after police discovered a white crystalized substance in two shipping containers arriving at Sydney’s Port Botany. Hussen was arrested along with the two South African men, who were using false identities to rent storage units. Hussen has been denied bail and is due for another court appearance in August.
