Veteran actor Bushra Ansari sparked an online debate recently after making comments on a TV show regarding the misuse of gender roles for comedic effect.
During her appearance on a morning program, Ansari questioned why male comedians often adopt female-oriented roles to appear funny. “Why does every actor have to become transgender to make people laugh?” she said, expressing her fatigue with this trend.
Ansari also discussed men dressing as women and performing exaggerated scenes, questioning whether such acts are considered obscene humor. Many social media users agreed with her, stating that these portrayals had become normalized in comedy.
However, others criticized Ansari, arguing that the issue was being taken out of context and that many such performances were intended to depict fictional characters rather than mock gender identity. Some also accused her of hypocrisy, noting that she herself has previously adopted exaggerated comedy roles throughout her career.
The debate has opened wider discussions online about the fine line between satire, character acting, and reinforcing stereotypes in television comedy, with audiences divided on whether such portrayals are harmless entertainment or outdated humor.
