Calgary Fire Leaves Families Homeless
An explosion and blaze at a five-unit apartment complex in Highland Park early Monday morning has left several families without homes.
Emergency crews responded to the scene around 3:30 AM, where witnesses reported an explosion that blew out windows and doors before flames spread rapidly.
Resident Thalia Nimijean-Sandoval was asleep when she heard a big blast. “I was sleeping, and I heard a big explosion and our front door was off of its hinges,” she told CTV.
The whole building engulfed in flames within minutes, according to her account. She lost everything, including two kids and being pregnant, and is now in shock.
Another resident, Trish Harris, felt something hit her back before doors flew out, as reported to CTV. Her personal belongings connected to her son were all gone.
At least three units were destroyed, with others uninhabitable. One person was treated for smoke inhalation. The cause remains under investigation.
